Mary and Terry Baker welcome you to The Botanic Nursery & Gardens located in Atworth, Wiltshire, SN12 8NU. We have a small plantsperson’s garden full of interesting shrubs and trees which you can wander around and enjoy in the peace of nature.

The plant sales beds are full of a unique range of plants and we are there to guide and inform you if required so please do ask, we love to share our knowledge.

The nursery is now open again from 1st March 2024.

We will be closing to visitors in mid July 2024. This is to allow Terry and Mary to take stock of the plants that are left on the nursery prior to making decisions about the closure or passing on of the business as we retire from it.

We look forward to welcoming you before July to the nursery and the nursery gardens. We have 2 events for the National Gardens Scheme coming up where guided tour of some areas of the nursery highlighting the specie Peonies in April and the intersectional Peonies in June will be undertaken. In June the unseen garden of Rookery Cottage will also be part of the opening. Refreshments will be available for Julia’s House.

Intersectional Peonies are currently being dug up from the Peony bed, its the perfect time to plant them.

Pre Order Digitalis for April delivery, many will flower in Summer 2024.

Jumbo Plugs and 11cm pots of choice Shrubs are available, a less expensive way to get some fantastic shrubs, roses and abutilons for your garden. They need to have cold frame or cold greenhouse protection until the spring.

Himalayan Maidenhair fern. A delicate looking but hardy herbaceous fern, with triangular mid-green fronds, on black stalks.

Athyrium filix-femina 'Frizelliae'

Tatting Fern. Distinctive fern with delicate small rounded fronds with fingered edges are arranged on long thin stalks. Deciduous usually, if not cut back the old fronds in spring.

Japanese Painted Fern.

Beautiful fern with wine-red leaf stalks and metallic grey-blue finely cut fronds. Around 14"high and 2' across, best in a sheltered site in part shade.

Blechnum spicant

A native hardy fern. Neat clumps of comb-like fronds dark green and glossy. From the middle central fertile fronds produce spores and as they age darken andhold themselves all winter. Size is variable depending on soil can reach 60cm usually lower and spread similar.

Evergreen.

Deutzia gracilis 'Rosea'

Beautiful hardy deciduous shrub with lovely soft pink flowers in May - June. Great in shady borders around 1.2m high and 1m across. Always asked for when seen in flower in the nursery garden.

Our 11cm plants are well rooted and will grow quickly to make show plant in summer 2024.

Dryopteris affinis 'Cristata The King'

Known as the King of male ferns and worthy of the name. This handsome fern has impressive crested, arched fronds twisted at the tips. Height 90cm. Evergreen. Hardy, shady spots in the border or woodland setting.

Dryopteris filix-mas linearis 'Polydactlya

We call it the "Pterodactyl Fern" An easy grown fern for any soils except boggy, the fronds are really attractive in appearance of texture and form. Creating shuttlecocks of finely cut leaf blades crested at the end of the fronds.

Deciduous 60 to 90cm

Dryopteris wallichiana

A truly delightful hardy fern with a huge range throughout North East Asia. Like most plants from a huge area it can adapt easily to many habitats. Good in sun or shade so long as there is some dampness to the soil. New growth is paler green the older fronds darker. Contrasting the dark central petiole. Evergreen.
